Hoorn has a rich history that can sometimes be read literally from the facades.
The city was established in 1300 and in the 17th century it was an important VOC (Dutch East India Company) city.

Merchants, traders, seamen, dignitaries and authorities populated the then capital of Westfriesland.

The many historical government buildings, warehouses and town houses, as well as all the ornaments that the residents of olden times left behind on them show this today.

A walk through Hoorn takes back even the most down-to-earth person to the past.

1609 September 3:
Henry Hudson reached the mouth of the Hudson River passing Staten Island and Coney Island and made the decision to explore the river, still hoping to find a passage to the Indies.
Henry Hudson, sailing under the Dutch flag, claimed the land for Holland.

1609 September 11
:
Henry Hudson sailed on and anchored off Manhattan in New York Bay.

1609 September 18:
Henry Hudson made contact with some more natives and was invited ashore. Hudson described the discovery as follows:

"The land is the finest for cultivation that I ever in my life set foot upon."

1609 January 8:
Hudson signed a contract with the Dutch United East India Company.
An old, small ship called the Half Moon was provided for the expedition.
There were only about 20 crew members - a mixture of Dutch and English.

1609 April:
Henry Hudson set sail in the Half Moon from Holland sailing under the Dutch flag.

For visitors from New York and other cities and countries, I have made a wonderful historic dutch itinerary of the former VOC towns Hoorn and Monnickendam that covers the lives and times of the 17th century.
It is four hundred years ago that Henry Hudson sailed a Dutch ship, operated by the Dutch East India Company, up the river that now bears his name and discovered what would become New York City.

The New York authorities are holding a massive celebration during 2009 of the city’s history and waterfront.
